What is a 501c3?
A 501c3 is the Internal Revenue Code to identify charitable or nonprofit organizations in the United States. Without this designation an organization, regardless of receiving state incorporation as a domestic nonprofit corporation, cannot receive tax-deductible donations. Without this designation, nonprofit organizations are subject to paying federal income taxes on any revenue.
Who must file for a 501c3?
Any U.S. state incorporated nonprofit organization must file for 501c3 designation with the Internal Revenue Service if it intends to operate in the United States or outside of the United States.
When must you file for a 501c3?
The IRS requires a nonprofit organization to file for 501c3 designation within 27 months from the date it received its state incorporation status also called an Articles of Incorporation.
